Fountain Report Excerpts
  1. Leaders at Banfield Pet Hospital hope a new internship program will help the organization begin to tackle two of the veterinary industry’s most pressing issues: a projected shortage of doctors and other caregivers in the coming years, and the lack of diversity among veterinary professionals. The NextVet program launches this summer with a group of 15 high school students, who will complete paid internships at Banfield hospitals around the country. Interns will work alongside veterinarians, technicians, practice managers and client service staff over the summer. In addition to watching clinical skills in action, they’ll have the chance to see how veterinary teams work together and communicate with clients.
  1. Crum & Forster Pet Insurance Group is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. This coincides with a recent expansion of the company’s business to include all pet insurance within Crum & Forster, growing its total number of pets insured to more than 500,000. Its most recognizable program is ASPCA Pet Health Insurance, and the company has partnerships with PetCoach LLC (provider of Petco pet insurance plans), Pumpkin Insurance Services and Spot Insurance Services, as well as several Canada-based groups. Crum & Forster was a founding member of the North American Pet Health Insurance Association.
  1. The American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges has received a $1.3 million grant from the Stanton Foundation to support the AAVMC Spectrum of Care initiative. “Spectrum of care” refers to the concept of offering clients a range of evidence-based care options, so they have more choices than just the most expensive treatment. The purpose of the AAVMC initiative is “to provide the infrastructure and support for a unified and collaborative approach across veterinary colleges that brings SOC pedagogy to veterinary education,” according to the announcement. The new grant will support work over the next two years to develop an educational model including the competency outcomes, assessment strategies and learning experiences that will prepare graduates to effectively practice this type of care.
