- Elanco Animal Health announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Credelio Quattro, a canine oral parasiticide with protection against six types of parasites—fleas, ticks, heartworms, roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms. Credelio Quattro is a single, monthly chewable tablet for dogs eight weeks of age or older and is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2025.
- Heartworm infection rates across the U.S. have steadily increased for nearly two decades despite the greater availability and efficacy of preventatives, according to the American Heartworm Society. In 2001, the number of heartworm-positive dogs was estimated at 800,000. Twenty years later, that estimate has reached well over 1.2 million. Veterinarians are urged to prescribe instead of merely recommend products before the client walks out of the clinic door.
- A recent analysis by Brakke Consulting on behalf of AVMA shows that the population of veterinarians is likely to grow faster than pet-owning households if all 13 proposed veterinary schools become accredited. With 33 U.S. veterinary colleges currently recognized by the AVMA Council on Education (AVMA COE), this would represent a nearly 40% increase in a 10-year period.
