  1. Targeting a veterinarian shortage in their state, New Hampshire lawmakers are turning to foreign trained veterinarians stuck in an overburdened licensing pipeline. A new state law, taking effect Sept. 17, creates a conditional license for veterinarians who have completed three of four parts in the AVMA’s Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG) program.
  1. USDA’s Economic Research Service was expected to provide an updated 2024 net farm income forecast on Sept. 5. Even with improvements in livestock margins, the August Ag Economists’ Monthly Monitor showed most ag economists expect the further deterioration in crop prices to weigh on the overall net farm income picture and force the agency to revise its forecast lower.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza has been present in the U.S. egg industry since February 2022 and has caused the depopulation of approximately 73.4 million layers over 57 flocks total, according to the United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. The 31-month-long (and counting) outbreak has caused the layer supply in the U.S. to fluctuate significantly and egg prices to see historical highs in conventional and specialty options.
